Please stay on the trails. We have reports of issues with sleds riding off trail on the former ELF lines south of Clam Lake where an elk acclimation pen has been setup in a semi-primitive area. Please remain on the trail and well away from this area. Thank you. ASHLAND COUNTY The Ashland County Snowmobile Alliance reports the trails North of County Trunk C are closed at this time. Also, North of Old Baldy is closed at this time. You can ride up to Old Baldy from Clam Lake and go back the same way. South of Mellen is open and in fair condition. Be cautious of the 5th Street Corridor in Ashland as it's pretty bare now. The Tri-County Corridor is open and snow covered but not groomed. There are different conditions throughout the County. Over-all...trails north of Mellen are closed and trails south of Mellen are in Fair Condition. SAWYER COUNTY The trails in Sawyer County are in poor condition. With warmer temps over the last week and with very little snow fall the trails have reduced in quality. The trials in open areas are a frozen base layer with dirt showing in spots. The trails in the woods held up slightly better, but are still mostly just a frozen base layer. Lakes are holding up the best and remain in fair condition. The groomers have not been running as of late. The forecast does not show much for snow until next week. There are still some people riding

Dead Horse Run ATV Trail
This 78 mile long trail has links with the Tuscobia Trail, and Stock Farm Bridge Campground as well as ATV routes and trails to Gildden, Clam Lake, and Cayuga. The entire Dead Horse System is 78 miles with several loops to choose from. What to Expect: Most of the trail system is located on snowmobile trails with a tread about 14 feet wide. Much of the trail has a firm tread; however, some sections are located on wetter soils and pools of water may be present on the trail. In addition to bringing tools and perhaps fuel, one should consider a tow strap in your kit. On this trail system, Clam Lake is one of the few opportunities for purchasing fuel. The Dead Horse Slough Trail Head is located on the north side of State Highway 77 approximately 3 miles east of Clam Lake, WI, next to the Dead Horse Slough. There is a small gravel parking lot for about 6 cars. It is possible to park a trailer in the lot but turning space is limited.
Snowmobile Trails #8 and #9A
The Chequamegon National Forest has hundreds of miles of trails that are groomed on a weekly basis. These trail systems interconnect with Bayfield County, Ashland County, Sawyer County and Price County snowmobile trails and the Tri-County system, increasing the options and miles available for the avid snowmobiler! These well groomed trails connect Clam Lake with Hayward, Hurley, Cable and Ashland making Clam Lake the ideal base camp for a Northern Wisconsin snowmobile vacation!
